Background Introduction

Procalcitonin (PCT) is a protein composed of 116 amino acids with a molecular weight of about 13 kDa. When severe bacterial, fungal and parasitic infections, sepsis and multiple organ failure occur, the level of PCT in plasma increases, which is a parameter for diagnosing and monitoring infection of bacterial inflammatory disease. At the early stage (2-3h) of systemic inflammatory reaction caused by bacterial infection, the PCT concentration can rise, reaching the peak at 12-24h after infection. The PCT concentration was in direct proportion to the severity of the infection and returned to normal after the infection disappeared. It has a high clinical value in early diagnosis of severe bacterial infection, disease risk classification, prognosis, evaluation of anti-infection efficacy, and guidance of taking antibacterial drugs.
