Background Introduction

Ferritin (FER) is an iron containing protein, which widely exists in various mammalian organs such as liver, spleen, kidney and bone marrow, especially spleen and liver. The detection of serum ferritin can not only judge the iron storage in the body, diagnose iron deficiency anemia and iron overload, and investigate the nutritional status, but also can be used as a tumor marker to serve as reference for the diagnosis of some clinical malignant tumors, especially liver cancer.

When liver cancer occurs, the ferritin synthesized by cancer cells increases. Meanwhile, the liver function deteriorates since the liver cells are damaged, and the ferritin stored in the cytoplasm of liver cells overflows into the blood, increasing the serum ferritin concentration. Therefore, it can be used for early detection of liver cancer. In addition, during the treatment of liver cancer, the decrease of serum ferritin indicates that the treatment is effective, while its increase marks the deterioration and reoccurrence of liver cancer and its constant increase marks a poor prognosis. Therefore, the determination of serum ferritin can be used as one of the monitoring methods for the therapeutic effect of liver cancer treatment, especially for patients with negative AFP.
